| Chafee E-bus coming to Alameda County |
|
| |
| The Community Connect program of the Community College Foundation has a mobile resource center, the Chafee E-Bus, which has provided free educational and vocational workshops to over 900 foster and probationary youth throughout California. A major component of these workshops focuses on providing youth with access to information about college. At each event, speakers from a local college's Financial Aid, and/or Outreach Departments come inform the youth about the application and enrollment process, and about available financial resources.
In addition to these presentations, youth aboard the bus are able to use one of the 12 computer workstations to research a college or vocational school and begin filling out the Financial Aid and Chafee Grant applications. Youth are also able to build resumes, conduct job searches, and/or research other resources that may benefit their immediate or long-term future.
Workshops typically are conducted at group homes, Independent Living Program modules, Probation Camps, Alternative Education Schools, youth service organizations, or at a local college. Each workshop runs approximately for 3 hours and serves up to 12 youth.
The program will be in Alameda and San Francisco County in June. For information about setting up an event, contact Michael Flaxman, Project Coordinator, at 213-427-6910.
